Secondary school teachers' views, representations and practices of history teaching in the age of globalization. A qualitative approach.
Summary:
This dissertation field of research focuses on the investigation of the opinions of secondary education teachers and more specifically on active high school philologists about the history lesson in the modern globalized environment. But how easy is such an effort? Taking into consideration the role of social representations and their strong influence on the consolidation of basic beliefs, a short trip to their childhood and university years is attempted - in the first stage. It is qualitative research that was implemented through semi-structured interviews with twenty (20) PE02 teachers who teach in both middle schools and high schools - mainly in general high schools - in different regions of Greece. Then the qualitative research focuses on issues of professional development-retraining of teachers in order to detect possible changes in their views on school history and its various manifestations in the year 2024. In the last part, specific teaching practices are examined through three different teaching units of the three classes of the General High School (one for each class) with the ultimate goal of searching for teachers' attitudes to contemporary issues of school history and the utilization or not of additional historical material that makes school history less ethnocentric and more a modern social science.
