The contribution of the illustrated fairy tale to the development of language skills during preschool age
Summary:
The objective of this study is to examine the attitudes, opinions and ideas of teachers, speech and language therapists and special educators regarding the role of picture books in the development of language skills during the preschool period. Accordingly, a survey utilising a questionnaire was employed, comprising twenty questions (closed and open-ended), thereby enabling participants to cite their personal opinions and experiences. The research sample comprised eighteen participants, comprising speech and language therapists, teachers and special educators. The set of questions, formulated based on the findings of the literature review, was designed to gather information about the utilisation of picture books and fairy tales in the context of preschool education. A review of the literature revealed that toddlers respond positively to the presence of visual stimuli during story reading, which contributes to their language development in a supportive manner. The present study, which was conducted on a smaller scale, corroborates the findings of previous studies and demonstrates the contribution of picture books to all levels of infants' speech (phonological, morphosyntactic, semantic and communicative).
