Children's Nutrition Education: Role Perception and Self-Efficacy of Primary Education Teachers in Greece
Summary:
Childhood obesity is a concerning phenomenon with physical, psychological, social and economic dimensions. Greece exhibits some of the highest prevalence rates across Europe. Unhealthy dietary habits are a key factor in the onset of childhood obesity. School environment is considered ideal for implementing health promotion and education interventions, while teachers play a crucial role in the success of prevention interventions against childhood obesity and effectively influence children's dietary habits. Teachers' self-efficacy predicts the implementation of effective nutrition education. This study investigates the attitudes and perceptions of primary school teachers in Greece regarding their role and self-efficacy in children's nutrition education, the influence of their dietary habits, and the prevention of childhood obesity. It is a cross-sectional study using an online questionnaire, which was culturally adapted to Greek using the focus group technique. A total of 105 teachers working in public and private primary education schools in Greece participated. Teachers seemed to recognize their role in preventing childhood obesity; however, they exhibit low levels of self-efficacy regarding their ability to change their students' dietary behaviors. Furthermore, it was found that a supportive nutritional environment of the school premises increases teachers' confidence in teaching nutrition. Future interventions should invest in enhancing teachers' self-efficacy and improving school's nutritional environment.
