Secondary biology teachers' attitudes towards outdoor education in biology course
Summary:
Outdoor education (OE) or education outside of the classroom is a way of learning that is becoming increasingly popular among teachers recently. OE offers many psychological and physical benefits for students. At the same time, OE is perfectly combined with the subject of Biology. However, there are some obstacles, which are mainly lack of time and experience, unwillingness and the strong feeling of unsafety on behalf of teachers. The goal of the present thesis is to explore secondary biology teachers’ attitudes towards the use of OE on teaching this subject. For this reason, a questionnaire was created and was delivered to biology teachers in Greece. From the 121 responses that were collected, their attitudes are captured. It was found that the majority of the teachers knows the basics about what is OE, which are the necessary features that a teacher should has to use OE, which are the benefits and the obstacles of OE. Almost everyone has strong intension to apply OE and believes that OE should be embodied in secondary education. Nevertheless, only a tiny part of the sample uses OE more than three times per year, meanwhile a quarter of the participants has never applied OE. So, it emerged an optimistic and positive attitude towards OE in Biology, however, this is not imprinted in real school life.
