God and old age in Greek and Serbian proverbial discourse. A comparative examination
Summary:
In folk literature, the proverb is included as a basic genre and has been included in the field of interest of Folkloristics since the foundation of the discipline. The present paper presents comparatively similarities and differences of the proverbial discourse of two peoples, Greeks and Serbs, in two thematic units: God and Old Age. At the same time, an attempt is made to explore beyond the process itself, to highlight also the social context of this popular genre mainly in the use of speech in modern times.
Greeks and Serbs are two Balkan peoples. The name Balkans means high and inaccessible mountain range, it is the peninsula of Aimos. Today it is considered the region of Southeastern Europe, south of the Danube River and east of the Adriatic Sea, includes neighboring countries located outside the natural geographical boundaries of this peninsula. In the past it functioned and functions until today, as a crossroad of civilizations, between the European and Asian continents.
With the genre examination, the research methodology (historical-comparative method), the juxtaposition of the Greek and Serbian corpus of proverbs respectively with their historical and synchronic analysis, the corresponding conclusions will follow about the functionality of this genre of folk discourse, which is used spontaneously in our daily lives without requiring special conditions.
The comparison of the proverbial discourse is not something new for the Balkan peoples. Bulgarian Nikolaj Ikonomov was the first scholar who systematically dealt with the proverbs of the Balkan peoples. His work was published in 1968. Apart from Ikonomov' s work, the main tool of research and study is the work of Nikolaos G. Politis, as its historical-comparative character includes Serbian proverbs. At the same time, the works of M. Meraklis and G. Tserpes on the proverbs of the Balkan peoples, combined with the studies of D. Loukatos and A. Doulaveras on the Greek proverb in general, as well as the work of the leading paremiologist of out times, Wolfgang Mieder, constitute basic theoretical starting points of the present study. Similar or different contexts can bring out common or new concepts and enlighten us about the common or different elements of the two cultures for each cultural condition.
