Problems and opportunities of integration of Artificial Intelligence in primary education
Summary:
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has undeniably emerged as one of the most innovative technologies of the modern era, influencing various sectors of our daily lives, such as healthcare, transportation, and education. This paper presents a systematic review through bibliometric analysis of metadata, based on the methodology of Prahani et al. (2022), suitably modified to enable more effective data analysis. The research was conducted using the Web of ScienceTM database, and the final set of results consists of 340 articles spanning the period from 1997 to 2024. It is noted that this analysis relied exclusively on the categorization of the Web of ScienceTM database and did not utilize content analysis tools. The aim is to investigate the problems and opportunities of integrating AI into primary education. Specifically, the utilization of AI tools at all stages of the educational process was examined, and an effort was made to answer critical questions and propose solutions for the effective integration of AI technology into the modern classroom. The research results focused on the impact of AI on learning and teaching, analyzing the problems and opportunities in methods of achieving learning outcomes, the development of teaching methods, lesson planning, and the development of assessment methods. Additionally, the enhancement of personalized learning through the use of AI and augmented and virtual reality technologies in the learning process was examined. Finally, the readiness of educators and the reliability of AI-based educational systems were evaluated. Throughout the preparation of this paper, it was observed that while the integration of AI in primary education presents a unique opportunity to upgrade teaching methods and provide a distinctive learning experience for students, it also raises issues and a series of challenges, such as ensuring that the benefits outweigh the risks and guaranteeing equal access to AI systems for all students.
