Reading motivation in preschool children. The views of librarians, teachers and parents.
Summary:
This thesis examines the theory of reading motivation in preschool children. That is, the internal impulse that drives a child to engage in reading and enjoy the process with the aim of acquiring and adopting reading habits in the future. Further definitions are listed and research is presented, both in Greece and abroad, that show how reading motivation is still found in these age groups, theories that explain how internal and external factors influence the motivation of children and the adults who surround them towards reading and consequently their school performance, and how education and its human resources, in cooperation with the family environment, can act supportively in order to enhance reading motivation. The aim of this research is to investigate the factors that influence the development of the reading motivation in this age group and to propose strategies for its enhancement, considering both the role of the school library and the corresponding programs implemented there, as well as the presence of technology and, of course, the individual preferences of children, always respecting their specific needs. Alongside this, the paper highlights the benefits of literacy, the main ones that stand out are the development of critical and creative thinking, the cultivation of imagination and the development of emotional intelligence. In addition, the developmental processes that take place in early childhood are analyzed.
In order to achieve this purpose, a qualitative methodology was used that included semi-structured interviews with teachers, parents and librarians in three different focus groups in order to provide a comprehensive coverage of the topic. The data collected was analyzed using thematic analysis and the Appendix to the paper contains a detailed account of all the responses and data recorded.
The results of the research showed that reading motivation in preschool children is influenced by factors such as support from parents and their cooperation with the educational community including librarians, the quality of reading materials and of course encouragement from teachers to participate in activities that combine play and reading.
The importance of systematic collaboration between parents and teachers focusing on the child's love and engagement with children's books and the inclusion of practices that enhance reading attitudes through a well-designed action plan will certainly strengthen the development of reading motivation in preschool children.
