Existence and Non-Existence in Luigi Pirandello's At the Gate. Theory and creative-dramaturgical adaptation
Summary:
With this research and creative thesis, we aim for a comprehensive study of Luigi Pirandello’s one-act play At the Gate, examining the philosophical implications that arise from it, in order to deeply understand its core subjects, and to proceed to a theatrical adaptation based on the same principles.
In the first part of our research, we will analyze the one-act play within the broader context of Italian dramaturgy of its time, considering its main currents and characteristics, as well as the distinctive elements of Luigi Pirandello’s writing, when it comes to subject and style. We will explore the commonalities between this and other works by Pirandello, to clarify how the concepts of existence and non-existence are employed in his dramaturgy. Through the philosophical and existential issues that characterize the play, we will identify its intertextual connections with other, earlier and later works, and eventually explore how it resonates with the present day, making its adaptation purposeful.
Our thesis project will be completed at the second part of this thesis, with the creative process of adaptation, that is, the writing of a new, original play, based on Pirandello’s At the Gate.
