The military stratergy of Andronikos III Palaiologos in the greek region (1328-1341)
Summary:
This thesis examines the military strategy of Emperor Andronikos III Palaiologos (1328-1341) in the Greek territories during his reign. This period was particularly crucial for the Byzantine Empire, as it faced significant internal and external threats. Based on primary sources, such as historical texts, as well as recent studies, this study analyzes the military campaigns of Andronikos III, their objectives, their outcomes, and their impact on the course of the Byzantine Empire.
The study begins with an overview of the empire before Andronikos III's accession to the throne, with the purpose of highlighting the challenges he faced during his reign.
Andronikos III ascended to the throne during a critical period for the Byzantine Empire, a time when the empire had suffered extensive territorial losses, mainly in Asia Minor, and was particularly weak economically. Understanding the extent of the crisis, Andronikos III sought to reorganize the empire both militarily and administratively, with the primary goal of restoring its prestige and confronting the numerous enemies that threatened it.
The thesis particularly focuses on Andronikos III's military campaigns in the Greek territories, a region where he achieved significant successes, such as the reintegration of Thessaly and Epirus into the empire, thus expanding its borders.
The study analyzes the military strategy that Andronikos III employed against the multiple external adversaries, threatening the empire. This is achieved through a thorough analysis of the military conflicts, the resources at his disposal, the tactical choices he made, and the goals he aimed to accomplish. Additionally, the thesis explores how Andronikos III managed the complex relations between the empire and its neighbors. Through this analysis, his efforts to reorganize the Byzantine Empire and ensure the survival of the Byzantine state in an unstable environment are made apparent.
Finally, the thesis concludes that while the military strategy of Andronikos III achieved some short-term successes, such as the expansion of Byzantine territories in the Greek region, it also highlighted the weaknesses and problems of the Byzantine Empire. The Byzantines' inability to effectively counter the Ottoman threat, the lack of resources, the increasing reliance on financially powerful men, and the constant need for the emperor to campaign in defense of the empire's borders made it difficult to maintain his achievements in the long term.
