Summary:
This dissertation is based on the work "Baroque Architecture in Classical Antiquity," written by M. Lyttelton. This study examines the concept of "Baroque" architecture as defined by H. Wölfflin and attempts to identify its presence in the architecture of the Classical Greek and Hellenistic periods. It will be demonstrated that the same elements and concepts that were employed in the construction of “Baroque” architecture of the 17th century are already evident in buildings like the Temple of Apollon at Bassae. As Lyttelton has already indicated, these are elements such as an increased ornamentation and a break between structure and appearance. However, it will also be demonstrated that from the late fifth century BCE onwards, and especially during the fourth century, elements such as contrasts, surprise, dynamism, and movement also emerged more prominently and were given an important role in architecture. These elements were employed in an attempt to challenge the established norms of the classical period and in order to create something innovative.
