Bioinformatics pipelines for metagenomics analysis of human gut microbiome in HBV - infected patients
Summary:
The gut-liver axis is responsible for the communication between the two organs. The microbiome of the intestinal tract is directly related to liver disease caused by hepatitis B virus (HBV), starting with acute hepatitis, which then progresses to chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis and finally hepatocellular carcinoma. Research studies and meta analyses have reported different microbiome signatures at different stages of the disease, whilst the results still remain partially consistent. We performed a systematic meta-analysis on 622 stool samples from seven publicly available 16s rRNA gene datasets across all stages of the disease. We used the MMUPHin novel tool which uses the batch corrections method that reduces technical versus biological differences between datasets, which has not been used in meta-analysis of hepatitis b samples. We identified microbial signatures at all stages of the disease, which could be used as potential biomarkers.
