Πολιτιστική πολιτική και λογοτεχνία στη δικτατορία του Ιωάννη Μεταξά (1936-1941)
Translated title:
Cultural policy and literature during the dictatorship of Ioannis Metaxas (1936-1941)
Summary:
This doctoral thesis is divided into two parts. The first part is person-centred and constitutes a complete cultural biography of Ioannis Metaxas (1871-1941), focusing on the longstanding relationship of the Cephalonian politician with arts and especially literature. This initial approach largely explains the particular emphasis later placed on cultural policy during the period of his dictatorship (1936-1941), as well as the reason why his regime sought to honour Greek writers both ‘‘materially and morally’’. The second part examines the cultural policy of the 4th of August Regime (1936-1941). It presents the causes, ideas ("Third Hellenic Civilization"), individuals (the leading role of Metaxas and the secondary roles of K. Bastias, P. Prevelakis, K. Kotzias, Th. Nikoloudis), actions, and the impact of the cultural policy, especially in the field of modern Greek literature. At the same time, it examines the attitude kept by writers (e.g., P. Haris, Gr. Xenopoulos, Melis Nikolaidis) and intellectuals of the time towards the ideology of the Third Hellenic Civilization and to what extent this ideology influenced their intellectual and artistic production. Special emphasis is placed on the case of Stratis Myrivilis, analyzing his complex—both ideological and professional—close relationship with the regime and the dictator himself.
