Music Performance Anxiety: The comparison of the opinions of piano teachers in Greece
Summary:
Music performance anxiety is a common phenomenon that many musicians experience before, during and after a musical performance. The purpose of this study is to explore and compare the attitudes of piano teachers in Greece regarding music performance anxiety in their students. In the next stage, the difficulties encountered by the piano teachers and the challenges posed by MPA in their teaching are investigated. Finally, extensive reference is made to the educational process and the teacher-student-parent triad in terms of dealing with music performance anxiety.
This research used qualitative methodology, collecting samples through semi-structured interviews with five piano teachers. During these interviews, the views, experiences and practices of piano teachers regarding the management of music performance anxiety in their students were sought. The analysis of the results revealed that music performance anxiety is a multidimensional phenomenon with multiple causes, both organic and psychological. The nature of the piano as an instrument which requires skill, dedication, coordination and systematic study creates an additional stress for students. One factor that seems to significantly influence stress is the timing of the onset of piano study. Students who start at an early age tend to experience less anxiety than those who start later, as early familiarity with the instrument allows them to develop greater confidence and stress management skills. In addition, the role of the parent appears to be critical, as support or excessive pressure from parents can either reduce or exacerbate students' anxiety levels. For this reason, coping with it must be multi-faceted and result from a collaboration between
teacher, parent and student. An understanding of these factors can lead to more targeted
educational approaches that will help reduce anxiety while enhancing students' development and overall piano performance.
