Attitudes and dispositions of VET teachers regarding the transformation of the school into a Learning Organization and Learning Community (OLC)
Summary:
The idea of the learning organization in the context of management theory was developed by Argyris and Schon (1978) and was popularized by Senge (1990) (Pasias et al. 2024:18). The learning organization is a place where a 'learning atmosphere', 'learning culture' or 'learning climate' is fostered and where 'learning for learning' is essential for all involved (OECD, 2016: Introduction).
A lot of research has been carried out at international and national level in the field of Organizational Learning Communities (OLCs) or Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) in relation to Primary or Secondary Education. However, only few focus on VET. This study serves this very purpose. It explores the attitudes and dispositions of VET teachers towards the transformation of the school into an OLC.
The transformation of the school into an OLC is explored along seven axes:
- School & Vision
- School & Collaborative Culture - Learning
- School & Processes
- School & Professional Development of Teachers
- School & Leadership
- School & Feedback, Reflection, Peer Evaluation
- School & Good Practice - Educational Networks and Flows
The results of the survey indicate a very strong predisposition and moderate to very strong attitude of VET teachers towards the transformation of the school into an OLC, even though relatively lower values were recorded on the axis of feedback, reflection and peer evaluation. Among the significant results is that the highest score both in terms of dispositions and attitudes is recorded for the axis of Collaborative Culture - Learning. It is also shown that there is statistical significance in the relationship between dispositions and gender, with females having a statistically significant, higher mean score in dispositions than males.
