The effect of trunk and shoulder strength on throwing velocity in elite adolescent water polo athletes
Summary:
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between trunk and shoulder strength with throwing velocity and shoulder rotation strength ratio (ER/IR Ratio) in elite adolescent water polo players of both genders. 41 elite adolescent water polo athletes took part in the study (23 female athletes and 18 male athletes, n=41, age: 15.43 ± 0.87 years). Sprint Motion 1080 (Sweden) was used to measure the throwing velocity, the athletes performed 3 maximal concentric efforts in two experimental conditions: inside the laboratory and inside the pool. For the isokinetic evaluation of shoulder’s internal and external rotators of the dominant arm and the isometric evaluation of trunk’s flexors and extensors, Biodex System 4 was used. Athletes performed 5 concentric maximal efforts at 60°/s and 180°/s and 5 isometric maximal attempts at 90°/s, for 5 seconds respectively. Our findings showed that there is a statistically significant relationship between trunk and shoulder strength with throwing velocity in both experimental conditions at all angular velocities (p˂0.05). ER/IR Ratio was 0.63 ± 0.11 at 60°/s and 0.71 ± 0.14 at 180°/s. From the above results it is concluded that incorporating a core and shoulder muscle strengthening program into the training of athletes could potentially improve throwing velocity and reduce the chances of shoulder injury in the future.
