Anatomical changes in the intima of the abdominal aorta due to the effect of ACE inhibitors
Summary:
In recent years, all cardiovascular diseases have, by a huge margin, become the main cause of death in the world population, exceeding by far the frequency of deaths from neoplastic diseases, respiratory problems, and even the pandemic of COVID-19 virus.
The medical world and health professionals, therefore, have to face a massive challenge in the face of cardiovascular diseases, which increase not only the mortality rate but also partial or total disabilities, burdening in this way both the quality of life of the patients and the countries' health systems which have been called upon to deal with vast numbers of patients who often need support for the rest of their lives.
There are many reasons for this increase in the frequency of cardiovascular diseases. The factors that have contributed drastically to the rise in the occurrence of cardiovascular diseases are hypertension, diabetes mellitus, smoking or obesity, atherosclerosis, various pharmaceutical factors, as well as, of course, the stress associated with the modern lifestyle.
Atherosclerosis is prominent in vascular diseases. A series of mechanisms cause changes in the endothelium of the vessels, causing its thickening and cracks in its cohesion, which in turn lay the foundations for the creation of atheromatous disease.
Due to the frequency of use of antihypertensive drugs in the population and especially in older patients, as well as the critical role of changes in the vascular endothelium in the occurrence of atherosclerotic disease, this doctoral thesis studies the effect on the intima of the aorta of a widely used group of drugs, of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and more specifically, the impact of ramipril on the intima of the aorta is being studied in hypertensive patients who used the drug in question in their treatment. The frequency of use of these pharmaceutical agents in hypertensive patients, whose number has increased rapidly in recent years, makes it essential to study the effect of this category of drugs on the intima of the vessels as this directly affects the creation of atherosclerotic disease.
