Beginnings of bioethics and bioethical positions of local Autocephalous Orthodox Churches
Summary:
Bioethics was conceived under the fertilization of the new medical and biotechnological innovations, which began from the 20th century onwards to constitute an undeniable reality. The explosion of biotechnology was to affect the very nature of medical science catalytically, as health professionals tasted the fruit of discoveries, discoveries that also affect the very psychosomatic constitution of man. Physician came in contact with the opportunity to bestow through medical science the much-desired bliss, longevity and generally the preservation of the health of the human being. But all these modern methods and practices were meant to avoid the danger of human value and dignity becoming objects of experimental processes. The Orthodox Christian church from early on felt the need at a pan- Orthodox level to forge a relationship of deep solidarity and altruism with the neighbor in order to avoid any effort that contradicts its original beauty for which it was created after all.
On the fringes of the hill of the positive sciences that is spoken of, the Church sometimes breaks with modern medical science because it unwaveringly upholds the crown of creation that is man. The next day of medicine with the advancement of biotechnology has already affected the dialectic of Medicine and Theology as scientific research seems to exceed the limits of medical Ethics and man is used even in an unethical and suspicious way in order to satisfy the desired solutions to the issues health. But this practice comes to reveal with how much hast and violence man puts his ego in the place of God and does not move with the obedience of love but with the disobedience of self- centeredness.
In today’s era Bioethics and bioproblems as they are called have been put in the foreground of the Orthodox Church. The local Aytocephalous Orthodox churches are asked to take positions on a number of issues such as transplants, euthanasia, genetic issues, forms of eugenics, in vitro fertilization, artificial intelligence and many others, which in modern times cause a nervous breakdown as they change the previous facts. So together with the postmodern era we are entering head on the After God and by extension the After sin era where bioethical issues will become causes of cultural wars.
