Efficacy of video game interventions on executive functions and learning abilities of children and adolescents with and without ADHD. A systematic review
Summary:
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental
disorder with onset on a very early age and is characterized by executive dysfunction
that later also affects learning skills and performance. Video games could in this case
be an alternative form of intervention to traditional cognitive treatment to enhance
both cognitive and learning skills of children and adolescents. This systematic review
was conducted using 3 major clinical databases namely Pubmed, Scopus and
EBSCOhost and included 22 randomized controlled trials examining the effectiveness
of neurocognitive, educational and commercial video games. All types of video
games proved to be effective in improving cognitive skills such as inhibition, working
memory, cognitive flexibility and learning skills, as well as improving ADHD
symptomatology. In conclusion, video games could be used as a supportive tool of
traditional interventions that aim to enhance cognitive functions and improve
symptoms of ADHD as well as traditional school teaching
