Primary school teachers' views on sexual education
Summary:
Introduction: The introduction of the sexual education subject in Greek schools and especially in primary education, where younger children attend, has always faced major problems.
Αim: The purpose of this research is to capture the views of primary school teachers regarding sexual education.
Material and method: The research followed the quantitative methodological approach using a structured questionnaire. The questionnaire by Gerouki M. (2011) was used in 201 primary school teachers.
Results: The teachers agreed that students would be interested in attending sex education and intersex relations topics at school and that the parents of the students would be disapproving of the prospect of systematically teaching the subject of sex education and more frequently the respondents reported that students use bad language to refer to the genitals or the sexual act. They also feel that they need additional training or some other help to deal more effectively with sex education issues, especially regarding commenting on someone's sexual orientation. It was also shown that as the years of teaching experience of the respondents increase, the degree to which they consider the ability to handle new technologies such as the internet to be important decreases, in order to obtain the necessary information and material.
Conclusions: The need for teacher training documented in this study may also be important for other factors related to sexual education in primary education, such as parents' attitudes towards it as well as the management of negative stereotypes that may manifest themselves within the school, leading to phenomena such as homophobia. In this direction and in order to formulate appropriate interventions, the research should be extended to the attitudes and opinions of parents and students on sexual education in primary education in order to identify the factors that should be addressed.
