Investigation of perceptions/opinions of primary education teachers and parents with a child in primary education regarding the role of the school nurse
Summary:
Aim: The present dissertation discusses perceptions/opinions of teachers who work in Primary education and also of parents whose children attend Primary education in the region of Athens and specifically in the Direction of Primary Education A, B, C and D of ATHENS respectively regarding the role of the school nurse. The concepts of Primary Health Care, health promotion and education and the school hygiene in the educational context constitute the theoretical background. School nurse is performed by both nurses and health visitors in our country.
Methodology: The survey sample consisted of 223 individuals, providing a robust base for our findings. We utilized the Perception Outcome School Nurse Role (POSNR) questionnaire to gather valuable data, which was analyzed statistically using IBM SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) version 29.0.2.0
Results: The study indicates that primary education teachers have a higher average age of 43.51 years compared to parents/guardians, who have an average age of 41.51 years. Additionally, 75% of the study participants were women, while only 20.6% were men. When asked about the importance of the school nurse's role, the majority responded that it is very important; they believe it goes beyond simply handling emergencies or addressing special needs. Moreover, over half of the teachers reported encountering unmanageable incidents at school. According to our survey participants, the school nurse is instrumental in leading the provision of health services within the school.
Conclusions: By expanding their responsibilities, the school nurse contributes to promoting health, academic success, and the long-term overall development of students.
