Summary:
The concept of mental health literacy was defined as knowledge and beliefs about mental disorders. Research that has been conducted on levels of mental health literacy in the general population shows their knowledge and beliefs to be moderate to inadequate. Interestingly however, it appears to be the case , that among health professionals the level of literacy does not appear to be particularly high and this has an impact on the mental health and well-being of the population. The Mental Health Literacy Scale (MHLS) developed by O'Connor and Casey in 2015, is a tool designed to measure public literacy and awareness of mental health.
Aim : the present study aims to translate and cross-culturally adapt the questionnaire to health professionals in primary health care.
Method: The process of translation and cross-cultural adaptation was carried out according to international guidelines. The process involved first translating the questionnaire, followed by back translation to ensure accuracy. The resulting pilot questionnaire was then administered to a small sample of 51 subjects by completing it twice after 2 weeks (test-retest). Internal consistency was studied through Cronbach's a and test-retest reliability through the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC).
Results : the study sample consisted of 51 participants with 92% of the sample being female and mean age of 39 years. Nurses, represent 76.5% of our sample. Followed by medical visitors 13.7% , midwives 5.9% , and finally doctors, representing 3.9% of the sample. The internal consistency of the questionnaire is satisfactory (α=0.757) as well as the control-retest reliability seems to be excellent with ICC: 0.85. Finally in the statistical analysis it appeared that people who have experience in the mental health field have a higher score, as expected.
Conclusion: The questionnaire successfully translated into Greek with all internal consistency and reliability indicators being acceptable.
