Developing regular education kindergarten children's awareness toward children with disabilities by teaching sign language through robotic
Summary:
This research examines the attitudes of students in formal education towards children with disabilities, focusing on the factors such aw empathy and awareness. Social interactions between students with and without disabilities are an important point of school integration, while the understanding of these attitudes is essential to strengthen a positive climate of acceptance and integration at school. The research used quantitative methodology, with the collection of data through questionnaires on a sample of kindergarten students. It is based on a questionnaire with predetermined response scales that allow the collection and analysis of numerical data. A total of 19 kindergarten children participated in the study, and their attitudes were assessed using the Acceptance Scale for Kindergarten (ASK-R). More specifically, the results showed that preschool children's pre-intervention attitudes were relatively positive towards people with disabilities despite the small sample size. Many students agreed that sometimes they behave badly towards other children and that they have made fun of a child who is different. Overall higher percentages tend to have a positive attitude before the intervention. After the intervention, we notice that the answers with a positive sign have increased, but also that the gender of the children, i.e. girls, show a higher feeling of acceptance towards people with disabilities compared to boys. Outcomes are usually evaluated using statistical methods to measure students' attitudes and opinions toward their peers with disabilities. The results showed that the students' attitudes are influenced by the involvement with means that concern these people, such as sign language. The students who had through the intervention more interest because of the technology to participate more actively in getting to know sign language. However, some students maintained negative attitudes. The research concludes on the importance of systematically informing students and promoting collaborative opportunities to cultivate empathy and acceptance. In addition to the curriculum, activities are proposed that will enhance knowledge around disability and encourage the participation of all students and promote empathy
