The impact of Lifestyle Medicine on coherence and the biological age
Summary:
Introduction: Every day people are called to face numerous external or internal stressors, whose action is threatening and disturbs the homeostasis of the organism.
Methods: This is a pilot randomized clinical trial that applied a holistic stress management program, Pythagorean Self-Awareness Intervention, to a sample of community volunteers without pre-existing pathology. Primary goals were to improve lifestyle, telomere length and reduce perceived stress. Secondary goals were the reduction of negative emotions, fatigue, neuroticism and inflammation. Also, the increase in self-efficacy, emotional intelligence, health locus of control, satisfaction with life and the improvement of memory and blood pressure.
Results: A total of 39 participants were randomized to an intervention group (N=20)- who attended the PSAI program- and a control group (N=19), who did not receive any stress management technique. Measurements were taken in both groups before and after the intervention and included: self-report questionnaires for measuring psychometric and lifestyle factors, cognitive assessment., body measurements and blood sampling for telomere length.
Conclusion: The intervention group showed significantly improvement in Lifestyle Medicine, sense of coherence, emotional intelligence, perceived stress, symptoms of stress and fatigue in contrast to the control group. In addition, body measurements, memory, systolic blood pressure and telomere length were significantly improved compared to the control group.
