Summary:
The aim of this study was the analysis of extracts of the fruiting body of the fungus Hericeum erinaceus and the development of a method for the quantification of its active metabolites using the proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) method. Initially, an extraction protocol based on literature data was applied in order to qualitatively analyze the profile of the active metabolites of the fungus. Different solvents were tested for the extractions and then quality control was performed on the different extracts. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) and gas chromatography coupled mass spectrometry (GC-MS) were used for quality control. Subsequently, it was possible to quantify the active metabolites in the fungal extracts and to isolate two groups of them by thin layer chromatography and in higher concentration by column chromatography. All the isolated active metabolites were identified using NMR spectroscopic techniques.
