Nurses' competence in providing spiritual care
Summary:
Purpose
This study was conducted to investigate the ability of nurses working in Greece to provide spiritual care to patients with life-threatening and/or chronic illnesses. For this purpose, the adaptation, psychometric testing and weighting of the van Leeuwen et al.'s Spiritual Care Competence Scale was performed in the Greek population.
Methodology
The study was quantitative. A convenience sample of n=202 nurses working in public and private hospitals, rehabilitation centres and palliative care hospices in 33 cities in Greece was used.
A "socio-demographic data form", an open-ended questionnaire to determine participants' perceptions of spirituality and the SCCS-GR, was administered for data collection.
The reliability, concurrent validity and internal structure of the SCCS-GR scale were checked. SPSS 25 was used for statistical analysis. The results of the open-ended question were subjected to content analysis.
Results
The internal consistency Cronbach's alpha reliability index of the SCCS-GR scale was found to be high (α = 0.920). Confirmatory factor analysis of the 27 items of the SCCS-GR revealed 6 orthogonal factors similar to the original instrument (Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin sampling adequacy = 0.870, Bartlett's test of sphericity = 3011.266, with 351 degrees of freedom, p < 0.001).
Psychometric analysis showed high internal consistency and homogeneity of the questionnaire, high degree of consistency, stability and content validity.
The reliability indices obtained by both the test-retest method and the internal consistency method confirm the reliability of the SCCS-GR in the Greek population.
Conclusions
The SCCS-GR is a valid tool.
Nurses working in Greece do not fully understand the concept of spirituality and report a moderate level of competence in providing spiritual care. The factors affecting their ability to provide spiritual care are age and personal health. A large percentage of nurses have a satisfactory attitude towards patients' spirituality and have good communication with them. Skill deficits and barriers are identified in the areas of patient counselling, spiritual care provision and spiritual care assessment. Significant difficulties are found at the organisational level and in issues related to policy development and implementation and leadership in spiritual care provision and interdisciplinary collaboration.
