THE PERCEPTION OF THE ROLE OF THE INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGNER IN MODERN CORPORATE ENVIRONMENTS IN THE CONTEXT OF VOCATIONAL TRAINING IN GREECE
Summary:
Instructional design in corporate settings and organizations for employee training is an emerging
field for educational sciences and the business world due to its promising benefits. The sharp rise
in demand for this specialty since the COVID-19 pandemic has raised questions about the role of
instructional designers in companies and organizations, particularly in Greece.
This paper conducts a literature review to identify the characteristics defined by the international
literature for instructional designers. It also explores popular practices, programs, and methods of
instructional design implemented by companies and organizations. The aim is to outline a profile
that can define the qualifications and responsibilities of an instructional designer and to highlight
the difficulties in clearly defining this role. The research concludes with a set of semi-structured
interviews conducted with 6 employees of companies and organizations working in the role of
instructional designer, with titles and responsibilities related to the field of instructional design,
and with 5 supervisors or heads of instructional design teams.
Through the research, common elements and perceptions are observed, indicating the
responsibilities perceived to be held by an instructional designer in Greece, as well as the desired
skills related to technical knowledge. Additionally, this research captures for the first time in
academic research the form of the instructional design profession in Greece, as well as confirming
reservations from both the international literature and the responses of participants regarding the
clarity of the instructional designer's role.
The purpose of the outline of instructional designer’s profile is to better target the educational
academic community in order to provide even more useful tools for future instructional designers,
as well as for companies and organizations that adopt instructional design practices, the numbers
of which are increasing, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic which acted as a catalyst and
brought about rapid changes in in-house training.
