Stress and self-efficacy in parents of children with learning difficulties regarding homework
Summary:
Parental involvement in children's homework is a challenging task that frequently imposes stress on all involved parties especially when children with difficulties are concerned. This study investigated parental stress related to homework, particularly within the context of learning disabilities, and explored the role of parental selfefficacy
as a protective factor against high stress levels. Additionally, various coping strategies that may mitigate parental stress are examined. A sample of 212 parents- 177 mothers and 35 fathers- completed the Parent Stress Questionnaire on Home Study, the Self-Efficacy Questionnaire, the Questionnaire of Strategies for Coping with Stressful Situations, and a demographic questionnaire. Our findings indicate that parents of children with learning difficulties reported higher stress levels compared to parents of typically developing children. Notably, parental self- efficacy did not significantly influence stress levels. Conversely, the levels of homework related parental stress were influenced by gender, time spent studying, school support, and participation in intervention programs. These results are discussed as related to the relevant literature, offering insights into the complex dynamics of homework-related parental stress while identifying parental characteristics that may either hinder or facilitate homeschooling. Finally, our findings may have implications for the development of targeted interventions designed to alleviate parental stress associated with homework, thereby enhancing the overall educational experience for both parents and children.
