Mental resilience and interdisciplinary collaboration of workers in the context of special education
Summary:
The aim of this research was to assess whether the quality of interdisciplinary collaboration
between special education workers can be related to or predict their mental resilience. The
research involved 180 employees from special schools and Day Care Centers from Attica,
who completed the Multidimensional Teacher Resilience Scale (Mansfield & Wosnitza,
2015), the Index of Interprofessional Team Collaboration for Expanded School Mental
Health (IITC-ESMH) (Mellin et al., 2010) and their demographic and service information.
The results showed that gender, marital status, parenthood, number of children and have an
impact on mental resilience and the appreciation of interdisciplinary collaboration.
Furthermore, it appeared that scheduled interdisciplinary meetings have a positive effect on
the estimated quality of interdisciplinary collaboration, while urgent and scheduled meetings
have a positive effect on the mental resilience of employees. The main objective of the
research was to investigate the relationship between interdisciplinary collaboration and
mental resilience where it was observed that they were positively related. Furthermore,
interdisciplinary collaboration and in particular factors of Newly Created Professional
Activities and Professional Flexibility, they seemed to predict resilience. From the above, it is
concluded that the good collaboration of the interdisciplinary team and in particular
communication, respect, tolerance to new ideas and professional flexibility, can enhance the
mental resilience of employees in special education contexts.
