Approaching the Work of Eva Palmer-Sikelianou with Theater Pedagogical Techniques for Adolescents
Summary:
From the end of antiquity until the beginning of the 20th century, the tragic Greek Chorus maintained an internationally marginal position in the stage act of ancient drama. In the context of the Delphic Festivals in 1927, Eva Palmer-Sikelianos revived the tragic Greek Chorus for the performance of Prometheus Bound, restoring the Greek Chorus to its original position: that of the protagonist. Connecting in a Neo-Romantic way the fragments from the study of the performances of the archaic red-figure vases with the ethnographic elements of the Greek traditional dances, as she got to know them when she came to Greece in 1905, Eva Palmer-Sikelianos revived the ancient Greek Chorus creating the feeling to the spectators of the Prometheus Bound in the Delphic Festivals that the ancient anaglyphs came to life before their eyes. At the same time, her devotion to ancient Greek-style hand-made clothing and to weaving on the loom led her to the unique historical connection between the costuming of the ancient drama and manual weaving. For the research part of this thesis, a theater-pedagogical intervention was designed and implemented on students of the 3rd Grade of Secondary School with the core of the work of Eva Palmer-Sikelianos as the central axis. The qualitative analysis of the data showed the positive response of the students, who are taught ancient drama as part of the ancient Greek literature, to the experiential, research and teamwork activities of the theater-pedagogical intervention connected to the first historically revival of ancient drama in an ancient theater in Greece. The conclusions of the research are consistent with the basic principles and the goals of the new Curriculum of the Institute of Educational Policy of the Ministry of Education that will be implemented the next school year.
