Summary:
This qualitative study explores, through interviews with 10 educators, the criteria they use when selecting texts to teach in literature course, of the third grade of Greek High School (G’ Lyceum). Its aim is to connect these criteria with their teaching practices and personal thoughts about the nature, role and pedagogy of literature. The study is conducted within the framework of the new Literature Curriculum of 2019, which gives to educators the flexibility in their choices. Through thematic analysis of the data, it was revealed that participants’ teaching practices are organized both on the demands of the examination system and on literature theory. In the first category, the instruction focuses on preparing the students for the Panhellenic exams. In the second category, the instruction is organized based on the way that Literature is treated; as an expression of the author, as language, as a voice that discuss the world. The criteria for text selection emerged as diverse and closely linked to the educators’ practices and personal theory, shaped not only by their views on literature, but also by their broader assumptions about teaching and their professional identity. In conclusion, this study emphasizes that effective text selection must be paired with appropriate teaching practices to enhance students’ interest in literature.
