"Creative Approaches and Extensions in Guitar Pedagogy: Their Significance and Impact"
Summary:
This Diploma Thesis was carried out within the framework of the Postgraduate Program “Music Education in Formal and Informal Environments” of the Department of Music Studies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Its central theme is the creative approaches, extensions and techniques that guitar teachers use in individual lessons to enrich them for a better learning experience.
Most of the time, music education is part of a formal education framework, which has many elements of academicism and ultimately, there are very few opportunities for the development of students’ creativity. The continuous acquisition of technical skills, but also the certification of levels and knowledge, is a consequence of the entire socio-political system, which of course also has an impact on music education. The curriculum, as well as the limited time for free activities, are some of the factors why creativity tends to decline in these learning environments.
People are often afraid to explore, experiment, improvise and act freely. They feel threatened that they might be criticized or make mistakes. But as it turns out, all of the above, as well as individuals’ insecurity, are some of the worst enemies of creativity.
The concept of creativity is very important for human development and well-being, as it is a factor in solving many problems by applying original and inventive solutions. In addition, it is a tool for critical thinking, managing and evaluating many pieces of information. As it turns out, by developing creativity, individuals develop skills that can provide them with mental well-being, adaptability and resilience.
For these reasons, it is especially important for teachers to try to sharpen individuals’ creativity with various techniques and activities. But first of all, they should have developed their own teaching philosophy, which will be distinguished by a safe and accessible learning environment, in which each student will be able to experiment and be inspired.
The research was carried out with a qualitative methodology and the data collection tools consist of interviews, with a specific sample of guitar teachers and their students. The data resulting from the interview process concern the central questions of the research, which are presented in detail below and are related to the creative approaches applied by the teachers, the attitude of the students towards them, the curriculum and its enrichment.
