Translated title:
The Role of School Mediation in Addressing School Bullying
Summary:
The present dissertation is comprised of three chapters in its theoretical part. Specifically, the first chapter attempts to provide a concise overview of bullying, along with a historical analysis of its development and prevalence in Greece and other nations. Subsequently, an examination of the characteristics of the involved parties, the various forms of bullying, its underlying causes, the consequences of bullying, and the available measures for its suppression or at least mitigation is conducted.
The second chapter comprehensively analyses a pivotal intervention for addressing school violence: school mediation. It commences with a historical introduction to mediation, encompassing its typology and advantages. The models of school mediation and their respective objectives are then discussed. The third chapter explores the implementation of mediation within a school community, addressing the selection and training of students, the role of facilitators and peer mediators, and the potential challenges that may emerge during the implementation process.
The research component of the study is meticulously delineated across four chapters. The initial chapter delineates the research methodology, purpose, and objectives of the study. The second chapter explores the contribution of mediation in reducing domestic violence within the school community, utilising the insights of ten high school teachers in Attica and ten students from all three classes of Attica High School. The chapter delves into the knowledge and experiences of the teachers in dealing with domestic violence. The students' perceptions of school violence and their experiences as either bullies or victims are also investigated. The final chapter of this study attempts to analyse and present the findings in detail and to make recommendations for effective responses through school mediation.
