Original Title:
Summary:
The purpose of this study is to evaluate nurses’ and midwives’ theoretical
knowledge based on 2010 guidelines for Newborn Resuscitation.
Data was collected by an anonymous questionnaire, distributed to all nursing
and maternity staff working in hospitals with NICUs, in Athens.
For the theoretic knowledge questions, the participants’ overall mean score was
7.02 ± 2.32 (range 0-13). Statistic significance was observed between the
correlation of participants’ knowledge and self -confidence in Newborn
Resuscitation (p=0.012), the attendance of a NLS course (p=0.001)and the level
of education (p=0.024). No correlation was found between age and working
experience and the score obtained in the questionnaire.
Finally, more incentives should be given to health professionals, while NICUs
should ensure further resuscitation training for nurses and midwives in order
not only to improve their theoretic level but to enhance their confidence when
performing resuscitation in newborns.
