The contribution of student self-assessment on the strengthening of intrinsic learning motives: Proposals in parts of the Curriculum of 1st Lyceum Chemistry Classes
Summary:
In this study is examined the process of student self-assessment according to
two variables: intrinsic learning motives and student academic performance. In
light of this, the study is carried out on three key research areas: 1)
research on the theoretical foundations of the method of student
self-assessment, 2) research on the control of the contribution of
self-assessment on the strengthening of intrinsic learning motives and 3)
research on the control of the contribution of self-assessment on the
improving of the student academic performance in the subject of Chemistry.
The purpose of this study is to explore by using the method of literature
review, the above three research questions and to suggest the design of
proposals of student self-assessment in parts of the Curriculum of 1st Lyceum
Chemistry Classes.
The results of the literature review on the research issues of the study were:
The student self-assessment is a qualitative form of assessment, with emphasis
on evaluation criteria and the feedback of assessment. It is part of formative
assessment which aims to improve student and is geared more towards the
metacognitive nature of learning. It is a complex process that requires
adequate planning and continuous practice of students in order to comply as far
as possible the conditions of effective implementation. It is associated with
internal procedures of the student, such as self- reflection and
self-regulation, with a direct effect on self-efficacy -an element that acts as
reinforcement for learning.
Finally, the research concluded that the process of self-assessment has a
particularly powerful role in strengthening intrinsic learning motives. It can
even improve the academic performance of the student in the subject of
Chemistry, directly or indirectly, creating higher grades or other desired
learning characteristics respectively.
