Summary:
Nowadays, new technologies can be used for teaching chemistry. This
application of new technologies prepares the students for a society that
internet, automated systems and audiovisual applications are integral pieces of
everyday routine. In the last years, there has been an attempt to introduce new
technologies, such as interactive whiteboards, the use of computers and
internet in schools during the course. Experiments are very important for
sciences in general and in particular for chemistry, they are essential.
Therefore, it is advisable to apply in school as often as possible practice and
laboratory classes.
This paper presents the pilot establishment of a school club named “Video
Chemistry Club”, during which school students set up and perform chemistry
experiment. These experiments have been filmed by the pupils themselves or by
the chemistry teacher. These educative videos can be accessed over the
internet from the website http://www.youtube.com/feed/. It is advisable to view
these videos during the chemistry course. Presenting an experiment through
video the professor saves time and reagents. On the other hand, students really
enjoy watching a video which has as protagonists also students, and this makes
it easier to understand and learn the principles of the experiment. In Greece,
there are still plenty of schools which do not have the appropriate reagents or
even worse do not have a chemistry laboratory. Thus, showing video experiments
in these schools is a pretty good alternative. As far as it concerns the
students who participated in the creation of videos, they have benefited both
from the teamwork and the creative part of the process, namely the setting up
and running the experiment. Finely, the whole process definitely helped the
club members to understand much better the principles of these experiments.
The experiments that were done are either impressive or relevant with the
chemistry theory for high school students.
