Work-Family Conflict and Professional Burnout of Special Education Teachers working in Primary Education
Summary:
The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between Work-Family Conflict and Professional Burnout of Special Education Teachers working in Primary Education. An additional purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between Work-Family Conflict and Work Engagement. The sample of the survey consisted of 139 special education teachers, 121 of them were women (87.1%) and 18 were men (12.9%). The average age was 35.4 years and the standard deviation was 8.9 years. For the purpose of the present study the following psychometric tools were used: (1) the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), (2) the Work-Family Conflict Scale (WFC), and (3) the Questionnaire Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES). The results showed that there is a positive correlation between Work/Family Conflict (and vice versa) with Professional Burnout and its three dimensions, Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalization, and Feeling of Reduced Personal Achievement. Also, there was a significant correlation of Work/Family Conflict and its three dimensions with Work Engagement. From the Multiple Regression Analysis conducted to investigate the likelihood of the Work/Family Conflict impact on Burnout and its individual dimensions, it was found that its effect was statistically significant as it could explain large rates of variation in Professional Burnout and the three aspects of it. It is proposed to repeat the study in a sample with same number groups in order to investigate possible gender differences as well as to identify variables likely to interfere with the examined relationship.
