A Longitudinal Study on theDevelopment of Reading Ability in Greek Primary School Students with School Performance Disorders
Summary:
This study is a longitudinal study of the development of reading ability in a specific clinical population, children with special school disabilities (ICD-10, 1992) or special learning disabilities (DSM-5, 2013).
It consists of two parts: the general or theoretical part and the research.
The first general part is a brief bibliographic review of the theoretical approach of the reading process. In particular, the definition of reading and the concept of reading is given, reference is made to developmental theories on reading ability, the cognitive models on which the study is based, and the factors that influence its development. There is also an extensive reference to the second part of the reading, the reading comprehension/ understanding of the text as well as its relation to reading ability. Additionally, the relationship between reading ability and phonological awareness . The concept of specific reading disorder, historical background, definition, epidemiology, diagnostic criteria against DSM-5 and ICD-10 is being developed.
The penultimate chapter of the theoretical part develops the concept of specific language disorder, its characteristics and how it is associated with the specific disorder of reading.
The last chapter presents the clinical diagnostic assessment of reading ability as a diagnostic procedure, as it is applied in the Community Mental Health Center Byron-Kesariani.
Below is the second or research part where the purpose of this diachronic study, its methodology, the results and the discussion is mentioned. Finally, the annexes and bibliographical references are listed.
