Safe Hospitals expecting big earthquake
Summary:
The purpose of this paper is to study the vulnerability of hospitals in seismic regions such as Greece and the possibility of reducing the scope of prevention. Proper risk assessment, including seismic risk, it is crucial for the formation of secure workspaces let alone safe hospitals.
The lessons learned from past crises clearly show that healthy preventive efforts largely paid off in subsequent emergencies.
The issue of hospital safety awaiting earthquake, should be introduced at an early stage in political discussions and negotiations with funding sources during the design process of a new hospital for the site selection and of course the formulation of detailed architectural and engineering science.
Assessing the vulnerability of existing hospitals is controlled at three levels: the structural - non-structural - and functional and is an important and fundamental step for updating disaster risk management and decision making in the planning stage and on the allocation of financial resources .

The most important element for safety against a major earthquake in the hospital buildings are reducing the risk of catastrophic structural collapse. Probably the existing vulnerable buildings, structural collapse are the greatest threat to life in a major earthquake. The choice of protection method from the structural collapse in an incomplete building requires two critical decisions on replacement or repair.
In areas that are prone to seismic activity, both existing and planned health facilities must comply with anti-seismic regulations.
