Production of teaching material for the figurative speech in the Greek language as a second/foreign language in the framework of Applied Cognitive Linguistics
Summary:
Teaching a language as a second / foreign language is a multidimensional and complex process.
A particularly important area of language teaching is vocabulary. Vocabulary in teaching a language as a second/foreign language has brought a variety of teaching approaches to the fore.
Figurative speech, as an important part of vocabulary, has been studied extensively in the context of Cognitive Linguistics. This approach, which connects language with the mind, supports that figurative speech is inherent in the human perceptual system and needs to be given equal attention in teaching.
The findings from Cognitive Linguistics researches were applied to teaching a second / foreign language and led to the creation of a new branch, Applied Cognitive Linguistics.
Applied Cognitive Linguistics argues that teaching figurative speech is important for learning a second/foreign language.
Focusing on Greek as a second / foreign language, it has been observed, after a brief search in the existing textbooks, that the figurative speech is omitted.
The lack of teaching material for teaching figurative speech in Greek as a second/foreign language was the starting point for the design and development of the present teaching material. The material designed addresses the levels of Greek proficiency from A2 to C2 and is aimed at adult learners of Greek as a second/foreign language. The present teaching material, which focuses on figurative speech related to emotions, contains instructions for teachers as well as indicative activities.
