History and Theology of the Eucharistic Invocation of the first four centuries
Summary:
From the research on the history and theology of the Eucharistic invocation (call) relying on texts and testimonies of the liturgical tradition of the first four centuries, it became obvious that the appearance of the Eucharistic service, on the one hand on an outs handing devotional expression of the congregation to the church, and on the other hand as a route of historical forms which spent an adventurous evolutionary process and initially marked the second hoc if of the second century, finally ended to the consecration of the Holy Gifts through the invocation, instead of the simple blessing and use of these gifts. At the same time it became clear that this expression of worship was accompanied by the declaration of doctrine.

Over time, it was ascertained in all Eucharistic variations and formations, such as those evolved into many different functional types which were tested, that the invocation, in any form is made through the processing operation of the Holy Trinity on the Holy gifts, is an absolutely necessary condition for the perfection of the holy service, since the third century and onwards. The “sanctification” and “confession” are now the substantial elements for the invocation in order to call the Holy Spirit (or the descend of God’s speech) to be present on the gifts. This fact is a consequence of the development of Christology and Pneumatology which have been considered as a prerequisite and a natural evolution of the forthcoming character of the Eucharist.
