General Principles of Fire Protection and Fire Safety of Buildings. Case Study «Hotel».
Summary:
The present thesis investigates the general principles of fire safety and fire protection of buildings in order to specialize them in the case study of a hotel. The present extends previous researches such as that of Koliopanou, (2017) who had reported on a 'housing' case study.
The purpose of the research is to first record and analyze basic concepts related to combustion, fire, fire safety, fire protection, in order to become distinguishable to the reader of special interest through etymological, conceptual, scientific and fire-fighting approach.
Then, specializing in the fire protection of buildings, the parameters and purpose of their fire protection as outlined in Greek Law will be described. This will be done with a historical overview of the evolution of the Fire Safety Legislation in Greece which took the current form of the building fire protection regulation. The research method to be used will be the collection, mainly from primary sources, of concepts useful for understanding the technical terms of the recently published building fire protection regulation, its scope, its implementing controls, its general and specific provisions, the establishment of fire protection teams and the reference to European Standards (EN) for fire protection systems.
Then, in particular, a case study will describe the fire protection requirements of a hotel with the use of a public gathering area and a pilot fire protection study will be drawn up, according to the recently published, in the Official Gazette, Building Fire Protection Regulation, Annex to this.
The results of the survey demonstrate the need to protect the buildings and their hosts against the risk of fire and, through the case study, record the measures and means of fire protection required by fire safety legislation to have a hotel erected at the time of its construction at the present work. An added value of the research is the usefulness of these results and the process to researchers (mechanical engineers) and Fire Brigade executives who are auditors in fire departments as there will be a pilot study that they can look at in this case. Equally important is the reference to European standards (ENs), active fire protection systems that have harmonized Greek legislation through the Greek Standardization Organization (ELOT).
