Summary:
Examples are undeniably a powerful tool in number theory that is a part of the didactic sections of mathematics. The focus of this research paper is on generic examples, that is, specific examples that make it easier for students to understand the general. Students were given activities and used these examples to justify their hypothesis mathematically. The process was accelerated with visual representations which are a helpful tool and enabled them to process the activity successfully in the worksheet. Additionally it gave them the opportunity to access it in the dynamic environment of geoboard to discover the pattern of the exercise. This led students to generalize and prove that their conjecture was true. Research shows the importance of the generic examples that contributes to the transition of generalization as well as visual representations develop thinking. In this paper six first grade students were asked to answer these activities, which were divided into groups of two. This qualitative study was based on the case study method and each group was interviewed clinically. The results provide the support that generic examples, as well as visual representations, have helped most students to develop their thinking and eventually achieve a higher level of generalization.
