Motivation and Learning Strategies of Students With Learning Disabilities and Coping Strategies of Their Parents
Summary:
The primary goal of the present survey was to examine possible differences between high school students diagnosed with learning disabilities and high school students without learning disabilities regarding motivation, cognitive strategies, self-handicapping and expected school performance. Moreover, the use of coping strategies by the parents of students diagnosed with learning disabilities was investigated. The clinical sample consisting of 19 students (9 boys and 10 girls, aged 12-14) whose difficulties were evaluated by a child psychiatric clinic was compared with a sample consisting of 208 students of typical development from high schools located in Attica. The parental sample consisted of 21 parents who visited the clinic for the assessment of their children’s learning disabilities. Results showed that the children with learning disabilities reported higher levels of test anxiety, surface learning approach and surface learning strategies, but lower levels of self-handicapping and lower expected grade point average at the end of the academic year, as compared to students without learning difficulties. Significant differences were found regarding the coping strategies of the parents according to their gender, whether this was the first assessment or a reassessment, and whether psychological support was recommended. The results demonstrate the need of learning support to students with learning disabilities, as well as the need of psychological support not only to them, but also to their parents.
