The improvement of the understanding of mathematical operations in Primary school using ICT
Summary:
The present PhD dissertation carried out in the faculty of Primary Education of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens during 2012- 2017. The title of the dissertation is: “The improvement of the understanding of mathematical operations in Primary school using ICT”.
The aim of this thesis is to answer the question if ICT combined with Realistic Mathematics Education theory helps students of the First Grade of Primary School improve their understanding of addition and subtraction of numbers 1-10.
At first, in the thesis introduction, in Chapter 1, there are thoughts concerning teaching Mathematics using ICT as well as an abstracted presentation of all chapters included in the specific thesis.
Furthermore, in Chapter 2 general questioning is presented. More specifically, the research background, the aims of the study, the research questions as well as the planning of the study are mentioned and presented.
There is a flashback concerning Mathematics teaching approaches in Chapter 3. Moreover, both traditional and basic learning theories as well as modern ones are presented. We also present approaches based on digital technology, and finally the Realistic Mathematics Education theory through which the improvement of the understanding of mathematical operations in Primary School is researched.
In Chapter 4, ICT in teaching process, its contribution to the learning process and its introduction to Education are presented. There is also a detailed reference on a variety of educational software.
Chapter 5 deals with the use of ICT in Primary Education. The Greek educational system is reported, the characteristics of Primary Education and the use of ICT. We refer to the teacher’s role concerning the effective use of ICT as well as the aims of the use of ICT in Primary Education.
A more in-depth analysis follows concerning the use of ICT in Mathematics Education. In Chapter 6, the reality concerning the use of ICT in Mathematics Education is reported as far as all levels of Primary Education are concerned both in Greece. Finally, the chapter deals with scientific researches which focus on the effective use of ICT in Education generally, as well as in Mathematics and more specifically on addition and subtraction.
In Chapter 7, the method that was used for our research and the reasons that led us to select and research on the specific mathematical topic are referred. Further information is given concerning the sample of our experimental research, and how the experimental group and the control group were assigned respectively. The development and the evaluation of the research tools follows and the chapter is concluded with a description of the research conduction, discussing also about the problems which were created through the selected method.
In Chapter 8, we present and describe the research findings after analyzing the data according to a conceptual and methodological framework. Tables and histograms of the findings after an SPPS statistical analysis computer program was carried out are presented and finally a detailed analysis on the research hypotheses results takes place.
To conclude with, in Chapter 9, conclusions and the research extension is presented and finally there is foreign and Greek Bibliography as well as the annex.
