Summary:
The present Postgraduate Thesis (MDE) aims to
to study a special period in the history of Greek photography, the
photo during the Greek-Italian war of 1940, of the triple
Military Occupation (German, Italian, Bulgarian) of Greece in the four years
1941-1944, but also of the armed movement of the National Resistance
ΕΑΜ / ΕΛΑΣ. This period is a turning point in the history of Greek
photography, as well as the war situation, its consequences, policies,
economic and social conditions that shaped it profoundly affected it
and determined the evolution of its various species (documentary photography,
photojournalism, war photojournalism). After all, like any other cultural
phenomenon, photography can not be understood cut off from the wider
social and political environment.
The research will focus on the photographers Voula Papaioannou, Spyros
Meletzi, Costa Balafa and Dimitri Kessel, who left the staff
their photo archive and released complete albums. Their work
stands out, because everyone highlighted particular aspects of life in the occupied
Greece: Voula Papaioannou the hunger in the occupation and the action of foreigners
of aid missions and charities, Spyros Meletzis and
Costas Balafas the guerrilla life and the battles of ELAS, while Dimitri Kessel
the battles of December 1944 in Athens. An attempt will be made to examine how the
war conditions affected the photographers' point of view, how they
formed their personal style, who are the social and political
factors that determine the subject matter of their work, but also the examination
of references to their work in artistic and photographic currents that existed
pre-war. Efforts will also be made to integrate them into a broader ideology
and political context.
