Rural facilities and the economy in southern and western Greece from the late Hellenistic to the late Roman period
Summary:
In present doctoral dissertation were examined the rural facilities of the Roman and late Roman period of southern and western Greece, as they evolve from 146 B.C. and the stabilization of Roman rule until the late Roman period, as well as the transition from the pre-existing productive model of late Hellenistic times. In particular, the archaeological remains were examined, in combination with the ancient written sources and epigraphic evidence, which testify to the existence of the agricultural activities of oil production, wine production, grain processing, livestock, beekeeping and fishing in context in farmhouses. It is the first time that all the rural installations, in which archaeological remains, were identified that testify to the existence of economic activity and in particular agricultural production, were studied synthetically. The collection and study of the available, disorganized until now, archaeological data, contributed to the reconstruction of the image of the rural landscape and the economy of the late Hellenistic, Roman and Late Roman period in Greece.
