An analysis of the cultural elements in Spanish translations of the Rembetiko songwriting
Summary:
The purpose of the present study is to carry out an analysis of translations, made in
the Spanish language, of songs belonging to the musical heritage of Rembetiko.
Specifically, we focused on the translation of the cultural elements present in the
songs mentioned. With the aim of working on that purpose, we elaborated a corpus of
rembetika songs translated in Spanish. We started by locating these elements and
afterwards we studied them in depth, in both languages, Greek and Spanish, so as to
proceed to the analysis of their translation. Of course, we used some theories of
translation that worked as a base for our study. As a result of our analysis, we
conclude that although there may be translations with really good intentions, and in
the same time there can be satisfactory equivalences between the two languages, the
terms that refer to the cultural realities strictly related to the Rembetiko, seem to be
rather complex and difficult to translate; and consequently, the result is not always
satisfactory. In addition, we offered some of our alternatives of translation, always
based on the theoretical precepts that we study.
