The materiality of –divergent– postwar poetic language in Eleni’s Vakalo’s and Michalis’ Katsaros’ poetry (1949-1959)
Summary:
Eleni’s Vakalo’s and Michalis’ Katsaro’s published during 1949 till 1959 poetry stands at the core of this thesis. The definition of time limits is based on two significant factors. The first one is related with the datum that both poets published during this decade an important –if not the most important–, with a qualitative and quantitative criterion, part of their whole poetry: Vakalo published four of six poetic collections –The Forest (1954), Plant Education (1956), Journal of the Age (1958) and Description of the Body (1959)– which she enlisted in the poetic unit «Before Lyricism» in 1981, while Katsaros, also, published his three «major» collections, Messolonghi (1949), Kata Sadduceon (1953) and Oropedio (1957). The second factor, which is the general one, is related to the postwar poetry’s beginning and to the fact that this decade stands as the postwar poetry’s point of reference. Furthermore, this thesis is based on a quadrilateral research scheme. In this scheme, materiality is the dominant term (aspect), which is approached as a thematic and not morphic factor in their poetic speech. Except for materiality, tactility and sculpturality are the terms (aspects) of this scheme that are indissolubly related with or, precisely, stem from materiality. Divergence is the fourth term (aspect) of this made research scheme. So, how, for what reason and with what aesthetic results do the materiality (in heideggerian terms) pervades Vakalo’s or Katsaro’s poetic speech? How tactility and, therefore, touch are activated in poetry with, mainly, cognitive intention? What is the aim of the sculptural rhizome (in deleuzian terms) in the poetic idiom and how is this rhizome appointed? What are the divergence’s features in Vakalo’s and Katsaro’s poetry respectively?
These are the questions that this thesis aims to answer.
