Summary:
Although terrorism in Greece has been studied as a political and socio-psychological phenomenon (even as an aesthetic), it has never been studied extensively from a linguistic point of view from the beginning of its appearance in Greece until today. This thesis aims to investigate linguistically a representative sample of the written fingerprints of various Greek terrorist and criminal organizations (proclamations) using supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques and systematically study the style of their authors. The purpose is to extract their distinctive stylistic imprint, search for authorship and determine the author profile and the underlying psychological parameters of texts whose authors either take responsibility and justify their actions or clarify the conditions of a terrorist action, as well as compare the Greek case with the finding of international literature regarding the terrorist “mindset”. The quantitative data will be studied both qualitatively and up to a certain point statistically in the light of the social and ideological parameters that interpret and are interpreted by language usage observed in our sample. This thesis will contribute to the field of Forensic Linguistics by studying linguistic data and establishing their usefulness as admissible evidence in the national legal framework.
