The challenges in the management of water resources in Greece and the impact of the climate crisis
Summary:
Water resources management, i.e. the set of actions for a harmonious relationship between available water resources and consumption with the aim of sustainable development of this relationship in the present and in the future, faces numerous challenges.
Given that the proportion of the world's water available for use is only 0.6%, the importance of rational management of water resources and the need to create a legacy of actions for future successors to this task are easily understood and appreciated.
The challenges that this sector has traditionally faced, mainly due to the increase in human activity, which either degrades, depletes or limits the available water resources, have been compounded in recent years by the climate crisis and its effects, which ultimately intensifies the adequacy of these resources.
In Greece, the rational management of water resources is an issue of the utmost national importance, since it concerns the security of society and the country's development. This is why it must be treated as a priority and must take into account new data, especially those resulting from climate change and the fact that negative scenarios regarding the impact of climate change on the wider Eastern Mediterranean region seem to be confirmed.
In the near future, the trend foresees less and less rainfall and increased water demand, resulting in a widening gap between water supply and demand. Therefore, in order to close the gap, special emphasis should be placed on better management of water resources by curbing demand and increasing the quantities of water available to meet needs, so as to ensure sufficient quantities of good quality water for future generations and for the environment.
In this thesis the current situation in water resources management in Greece is described, with the particularities that arise due to the geographical relief of the country, the existence of a very large number of islands and the concentration of activities that require intensive use of water resources (such as agriculture and urban centers) in different locations from the areas where water resources are available.
The impact of the climate crisis on this sector is then described, and finally proposals are made that could improve the situation and provide a basis for future generations who will unfortunately have to face more difficult situations.
